While these methods will not apply to all products/services, they will apply to many.
Lets suppose you want to market a particular type of product. You’ve done your research to establish that there is indeed a market for the product, but before you invest your life savings in stock, you want concrete proof that people are going to buy (very wise move).
At this stage it’s worth taking the time to do a little testing before you jump in feet first.
Well, the best way to KNOW if people will buy what you’re selling is to ASK them to buy it, right NOW. {Side note: Asking friends/family or a research group if they’d by a product ‘if’ you sold it may result in a lot of ‘yes’ answers. Immediately fetch the product and again ask them to buy it – now see how many part with their cash…}
Auction Testing
Set-up an Ebay auction with a handful of products (you can buy them retail for the experiment). This will cost little to do and even less if you cancel the auction before its deadline to avoid making a final sale. If the auction is allowed to finish simply buy the sold item from a retail shop and post it to the winning bidder, hopefully you’ll cover your costs. By using this method you can get a ‘feel’ for the market at very little expense to you.
Pay-Per-Click Or Pay-Per-Action
Another method is to set-up a basic web page with a couple of items listed for sale, with a Paypal button for each item. Then drive traffic to the web page with Google Adwords Pay-Per-Click advertising. This is an excellent method for testing market response and you can use Google ads to target specific regions. For example, you’re your market is Edinburgh, Scotland, you can run ads that will be visible only in that region. While this method is more expensive than the Ebay option, it can provide in depth market insight and valuable data very quickly. Similarly, you can use Pay-Per-Action where you pay for your advert only if someone actually buys the product.
