The first of January always gets me thinking of the past and the future, so I decided to grab a few moments to write a little about my beloved business – Starter Websites.
Starter Websites started life in 2008 as a ‘side project’ for a company I was previously a partner in. I was enthusiastic about Starter Websites from the start and constantly strived to improve value for customers and develop the suite of web solutions on offer.
Starter Websites was different as it was one of the first web design sites in Ireland to advertise website products (web packages) with their prices. The purpose of this was to provide potential clients with enough information to make an educated decision on whether the service was right for them and their budgets.
Up to this point people were being quoted wildly different prices from web design firms. This pricing strategy led to confusion and mistrust, something Starter Websites was to avoid.
In December 2008 I finished with my previous company and took over Starter Websites as a separate business and commenced trading from March 2009. My goal for the year was to revamp the website, improve it’s offers and establish a solid base from which to build a sustainable business. The later being the most difficult to achieve as the recession deepened and the already competitive web industry went into overdrive.
By keeping my ‘vision statement’ in mind (see below), Starter Websites survived 2009 and prospects for 2010 look promising.
1st January is my favourite day of the year. It’s a time to reflect on the previous twelve months and to start planning for the year ahead. It’s like starting with a clean slate but with the added advantage of another 12 months experience – and what an experience the last 12 months was!

I sold bootleg music tapes (you remember them right?) in school at the tender age of 13.
I was a shy kid in a pretty tough CBS school in Crumlin, Dublin. To make matters worse, I didn’t go to the same primary school as the other kids. Being shy AND the new guy in a class of 34 sure gets you a lot of unwanted attention.
Times were tough.
The previous Christmas my sister got a ‘boom box’ double tape track radio with high-speed recording. This was a huge leap in technology at the time. Imagine, recording an album tape at twice the play speed and at the low cost of a blank tape. Wow.
I had a small music collection I recorded for my friends and they recorded tapes for me. I realised between the three of us we had a lot of varied music.
That’s when I had my first entrepreneurial idea:
I headed up the business and took on my friends as partners – one equal, the other more a supplier (he had the most music but would not be selling or getting involved with production etc.)
I wrote a list out by hand and had several grainy photocopies made. I sourced ‘six packs’ of really cheap 60 minute tapes and blew all my pocket money on a pack. All I needed to do now was overcome my shyness the next day at school.
Easier said than done I can tell you…
But that faithful Monday morning, before first class, faced with ridicule and beatings, I mustered up all my courage and made my pitch, and handed out the list of music for sale…
The inevitable happened. Some of the lists were ripped up, the laughing began and I had the sinking feeling that this was going to be a tough week. What had I gotten myself into?
One of the biggest ‘head-cases’ I have ever had the pleasure to meet in my entire life made an order. I still remember the band, ‘S-Express’. That was the first. I sold about 10 tapes that day, my pal Stephen (a natural salesman) probably sold more.
After costs we were making around £1.50 profit per tape! Over the next few weeks we kept selling and the orders kept coming in!
We were in business, and more importantly for me, something changed. I had become an entrepreneur. I could make things happen. I could find things that other people want and pitch it to them and get paid for doing something I loved. I could also overcome my fears to make that happen.
I hope you still feel the buzz of being an entrepreneur. I hope you remember that you are a person who can make things happen.
And if things are tough right now – like your overdraft(s) is overdrawn, or Christmas is coming and your goose is already cooked – remember this, you’ll find a way through.

It seems there is a ‘slight misconception’ about Starter Websites and the regions I operate in. Because the site mentions Kerry so often some visitors think I only serve the Kerry area. This is not the case.
I guess the site is tilted towards Kerry web design as this is where I live (I’m originally from Dublin by the way, my accent ‘throws’ some people when we talk on the phone).

Starter Websites was originally a ‘static’ type website with a WordPress blog ‘tacked’ on.
When I decided to redesign and move servers I thought it a good time to build a custom website, with blog, on the WordPress (WP) platform. This enabled me to take advantage of the excellent WP content management system, now controlling about 95% of the websites content via the WP control panel.
The previous blog had some posts in it that I have not yet moved to the new site. I did think of transferring the database but because the number of posts is less than a dozen (and there’s a few complications around the database transfer) I’ve decided to just re-post them instead. I’ll use their original date and time stamp and set-up permanent redirects from the old posts URLs. I’ll be adding them this week.
The site still has a few jobs that need to be completed before it is 100%, and I’m working on getting those complete this week.
Besides that, I’m also working and testing the new Starter Websites Accommodation package, soon to be released. While most of the design and build is complete I am still perfecting ‘traffic getting’ techniques for these sites. Stay tuned…
