Quality Link Building Made Easy

Do you ever receive emails asking you to exchange links with other websites? These emails can be valuable to your link building campaign so don’t just dump them. Read on…

Links to your website are the most important factor when it comes to search engines deciding your website’s position. The more good quality links you have, the better your site’s position.

I receive several link exchange requests to my Inbox each week. While many of the sites are poor quality and built solely for the purpose of link exchanges, I don’t just delete the email. These emails are actually labour saving devices for those thinking of starting a backlink campaign and I’ll explain more about this in a moment…

Example Of A Link Exchange Request

First we’ll take a look at a typical link exchange request email. These emails tend to follow a standard format and it’s a format you can copy and use for your own link building campaign. See below (the marketers name has been changed…)

subject. I can offer you a HOME PAGE link back from my {insert topic here}
Guide website which is:

www.thesite.com/ with page rank 4

This email is suggesting I take part in a three-way link exchange. The site mentioned above will link to mine and in return they want me to link to a different website (their client’s site). Three-way links are better than straight reciprocal links but we’ll cover that another day.

Often the site they offer to link from is a blog with lots of links on the home page to other websites. Those website owners accepted the same link exchange request you got. Now, this list of websites are going to save you time and increase the success of your link building campaign. The chances of them exchanging links with you is very high because they have exchanged links before and obviously understand the importance of links!

So, Here’s What You Do

Don’t take the marketer up on their request if the link they are offering you is of little value. However, you should visit all the websites that are listed on their site (usually listed as ‘link partners‘ or similar). Record each of their email addresses in a list and also record their link page URLs.

When you have completed your list, email link exchange requests to each webmaster on your list. You can use an email similar to the one above and make changes where necessary for each…

Track Your Link Building Campaign

Keeping track of your link building campaign is important. Make a table or spreadsheet to record:

  • Who you send a link request to (only send one request, you don’t want to get reported for Spam)
  • Who you have linked to
  • Who has linked to you
  • What page on each site your link is on
  • The date your link request was sent (so you can track your success over time)

Thank those people who exchange links with you (it’s courteous and they may have other sites you will what to swap links with in future). Remember to check your links page occasionally and remove links to websites that have not returned a link to yours. Running this check is quick and easy if you keep a record of each page your link is supposed to be on.

Link building is an investment in your online business that takes time and patience, so do a little often.

Good luck!
Peter.

RSS Feed IconYou may have heard of RSS feeds but still find them a mystery. It’s a mystery worth solving though, as their use can help you dominate your local online niche with almost zero extra effort. Sounds too good to be true? Read on…

What Is RSS?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a means for people interested in particular topics to quickly access new information, news and other relevant content without having to search through countless web pages to get it. If your website includes a blog it produces an RSS feed. RSS pages are generated in XML and is made legible to the human eye through the use of RSS Readers or RSS Aggregators.

The Top 5 RSS Readers/Aggregators

The following RSS aggregators are the most popular currently in use. Again, it is necessary to access RSS XML feeds through the use of a reader.

  1. Google Reader
  2. Bloglines
  3. Rojo
  4. NewsGator
  5. FeedShow

How RSS Submissions Benefit Your Website

Getting backlinks from RSS aggregators for each piece of site content you publish means you’ll get backlinks from several websites automatically. This has the potential to increase your website traffic directly. The backlinks also increase your websites ‘link juice’ which helps drive your site up the search rankings, resulting in increased traffic. Increased traffic can and should lead to more enquiries and sales.
In smaller niches where competitors are not taking advantage of this type of automatic link building there is a very good chance RSS will help your website dominate the search engines.

Where To Submit RSS Feeds

If your website produces an RSS (really simple syndication) feed it is a good idea to submit it to several RSS directories. Check out this list of active RSS Submission Directories. WordPress websites are already set-up to notify Ping.com for your convenience.

Just imagine for a moment that your website could talk to you, you know, like have a regular conversation. What do you think it could tell you? More importantly, would you know what questions to ask it?

Website Owner:
“Hi website, thanks for taking the time to chat with me today, I was wondering if you could spare a minute or two to answer a few questions for me?
”

Website:
“Sure – fire away pal.”

So, now that you have your websites attention you’ll probably want to know:

1. How many visitors did you have this week?
2. What keywords and phrases did people use to find you?
3. Usually, how many pages does a visitor view?
4. How many of them found the site and just a quickly exited it again?
5. I added some new keywords to your pages; did more people find you as a result?
6. What key phrases are visitors finding you for that I wasn’t aware off?
7. What’s your most popular page?
8. What’s your least popular page?
9. What countries, states, counties or cities are these visitors coming from?

I know we’re just having a little fun imagining all this stuff about talking websites. But wow, I mean it would be cool if your website really could talk and answer all those questions – in great detail – with incredible accuracy – and without bias or emotion clouding it’s response.

But it can’t, so too bad
Take car

“Well actually I can.”

“Who said that?”

“I did.

You can ask me pretty much anything about how visitors behave when they come to see me; things even the visitors couldn’t tell you themselves.

You see; if website analytics are running I keep track of pretty much everything you could think of and then some. If you only used the information I have you could increase my visitor traffic and even your leads or conversation rates. If you’d only just listen to me and put in a little work, I’d help you improve your business all round.”

“Em, okay, how about we talk again tomorrow, 4:30pm if you’re available?”

“I’m available 24/7, 365. And I’m gathering valuable data for you every millisecond – so 4:30 is fine.”

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Every business that has a website (no matter how small) should analyse their web statistics regularly. In the face of the worse recession in ‘donkey’s years’ you OWE it to your business to use very advantage you have to ensure you survive and prosper while your competitors crash around you.

Domain Tips, Brand Or Keywords?

When optimising your website for search engines (SEO), the domain you choose can make all the difference.

This brief article highlights two important options businesses regularly have to consider before ordering their domain. The option you choose will depend on your overall strategy and goals for your business.

Option 1, Keyword Rich Domains

If you were running a web directory of “Hotels in Kerry” and you’re competing primarily for that search phrase, the domain ‘HotelsInKerry.com’ would be a good choice. The URL is packed with your keywords and clearly coveys what the site is about.

Both search engines and surfers can accurately assume the content of the website as it matches their search criteria. This can help with the positioning of the domain in search engines AND ensure a healthy click-through rate to the site.

Tip. Popular keyword rich domains are snapped up quickly. If you find you cannot buy the exact domain you are looking for you may be able to find something very similar. As you can image HotelsInKerry.com is already taken, so look for TopHotelsInKerry.com, VisitHotelsInKerry.com, BestHotelsInKerry.com and so on

Option 2, Brand Name Domains

When it comes to choosing a domain you could go with a brand name like ‘Oval’ or ‘Peaches’ or ‘Apple’ (thank that one is taken
) or something similarly obscure, but you better have the money to market it, if you want anyone to find it.

The word ‘Apple’ does not suggest the company behind it manufactures PC’s, iPods and other technology. Before ‘Apple’ came along, the word just conjured up images of a fruit. If I were to say ‘Granny Smyths’ what’s the first thing that pops into your mind?

That’s branding for you

This is less to do with choosing a domain and more to do with brand and strategy. The clear advantage to this is, if you can successfully market your brand and it becomes a household name, then searchers will usually have no problem finding you. However, if you can’t afford to rollout and sustain a marketing campaign to build brand awareness you might consider going for a descriptive, keyword rich domain with a call to action (if you can squeeze it in).

Option 3, Bonus Option

Okay, I said at the introduction we’ll discuss two domain options, there is a third and it is ‘the road less travelled’ but worth mentioning.

The age of the URL can be an important factor when if comes to SEO. If your domain is five years active you’ll probably get a lot more ‘love’ from Google than if it’s five months active. Particularly if the website under that domain is respected by Google.

This can be a problem for new websites trying to make their way to the top in the hostile environment that we call the Internet. The solution is simple though, but requires luck and money. Make and offer to buy the domain/website. Who knows, you might get lucky!

Every website has to be hosted on a web server in order for it to be available to view online. If you are targeting the Irish online market, you’re usually better off going with hosting where the servers are based in Ireland.

In my experience your website will perform better for local search (Irish market) than the same site hosted in the USA (or Brazil or wherever), particularly if your domain is .com, .net, .org, .biz. You can get around this if your domain is a ‘.IE’ as Google, and most search engines, will identify your site as being targeted to the Irish market. The same would apply for a ‘.CO.UK’ domain for the UK market etc.

There are possible exceptions to this. I have had .com sites on Irish servers for years that performed well for local Irish search. I moved a couple of these to USA servers and there seems to have been no negative impact on their positions for Irish search to date, over three months later. Perhaps once a site is labelled as an ‘Irish’ website by Google, the server plays a less important roll thereafter?

In conclusion: If you are targeting the Irish online market you should ensure your website is on an Irish server. This is particularly the case if your website is a .com, .net, .biz, .org.
